Russia: New anti-war protests, 2,000 arrests, according to NGOs

Several thousand people again today defied the ban on demonstrations in Russia to say “no to war” in Ukraine with rallies that led to more than 2,000 arrests, according to a non-governmental organization.

According to the specialized NGO OVD-Info, 2,114 protesters were arrested throughout Russia, a number that, according to her, increases to 5,250 people who have been arrested since Thursday for protesting against the invasion of the Moscow army in Ukraine.

In St. Petersburg, the second largest city in the country, about 400 people gathered in the main square to protest against the invasion of Ukraine ordered by Vladimir Putin, a journalist of the French Agency found.

“I am against the war. I was born in 1941, I know what it is,” said Valeria Andreeva, a retiree.

“There are hundreds or thousands, not millions, it’s a pity. I’m not sure our concentration will change anything, but it’s something,” adds Vladimir Volokhonov, a 35-year-old engineer holding a bouquet of blue and yellow flowers. of the Ukrainian flag.

Rallies took place in Moscow and about 40 other cities in the country.

These daily rallies are relatively small in size, but the mere fact that they take place is remarkable, as civil society is shrinking due to the repression in Russia.

The slightest demonstration without permission immediately provokes the intervention of the police and someone can be arrested even if he stands alone on the street with a placard.
