Russia obtains license to build two nuclear reactors in Hungary

The nuclear regulator Hungary granted a building permit for two new reactors at the Paks nuclear power plant, which are to be built by the state-owned russian Rosatom following a 2014 agreement signed between Budapest and Moscow.

Despite serious delays, the project, awarded without bidding to Rosatom, has often been cited as evidence of warm ties between the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban and the Russian president, Vladimir Putin .

In a decision on its website on Thursday evening (25), the Hungarian Nuclear energy said the Russian-built 2-gigawatt power plant at Paks could be expanded with two new reactors, pending more permits.

Hungary intends to expand Paks with two Russian-made VVER reactors with a capacity of 1.2 gigawatt each. Nuclear energy is not subject to sanctions gives European Union .

The plans for the new reactors at Paks serve Hungary’s strategic interests, Foreign Minister Péter Szijár said after a meeting in May with Rosatom’s chief executive.

The Paks plant now has four small Russian-built VVER 440 reactors with a combined capacity of around 2,000 megawatts and began operating between 1982 and 1987.
