Russia: Opposition politician ‘flirts’ with 10 years in prison for ‘defaming’ the Russian army

Popular Russian opposition politician Ilya Yashin is facing a multi-year prison sentence for “defaming the (Russian) military”, according to a post made by his lawyer on Facebook today.

Russian authorities have brought criminal charges against him, accusing him of spreading false information about the deployment of military forces, the lawyer says.

“I just received a phone call from the investigator – an investigation is starting at his home,” lawyer Vadim Prokhorov wrote in a post on his Facebook page this afternoon.

If convicted, Yasin faces up to 10 years in prison.

Yashin — a known opponent of Kremlin strongman Vladimir Putin and an ally of opposition leader Alexei Navalny (who is serving a nine-year prison sentence) — had been a vocal critic of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24.

He has already been fined several times for his postings, and is currently in 15-day detention for disobedience to authority.

It is recalled that the new strict law in Russia requires that the war in Ukraine be characterized as a “special military operation” and that no information concerning the Russian armed forces be made public.
