Russia: Over 3,000 civilians left Kursk borders in past 24 hours

Russia’s Emergencies Ministry reported on Saturday (17) that more than three thousand people left border areas in the Kursk region in the last 24 hours.

About 10,000 people are being housed in emergency shelters in 24 regions of Russia, ministry spokesman Artyom Sharov said.

Russia began evacuating thousands of people from its border regions on Thursday (15) after Ukraine said it was advancing deeper into the country in a surprise incursion aimed at forcing Moscow to slow its advance.

Kursk Governor Alexei Smirnov said the Glushkov district, which has a population of 20,000, was being evacuated. At least 200,000 people have been evacuated from the border regions so far, according to Russian figures.

The largest foreign attack on Russian territory since World War II took place on August 6, when thousands of Ukrainian soldiers invaded Russia’s western border.
