Russia: Plans naval exercises in the Mediterranean

Russia is planning naval exercises in the Mediterranean and has transported bombers and aircraft with supersonic missiles to its base in Syria, Russian news agencies RIA and TASS reported on Tuesday.

Long-range Tu-22M3 and MiG-31K aircraft equipped with Kinjal missiles have arrived at Hmeimim air base in Syria to take part in naval exercises in the Mediterranean, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The same announcement states that the pilots of the aircraft flew from their air base to Syria, covering a distance of more than 1500 kilometers.

The exercises, which will take place in the eastern part of the Mediterranean, will involve ships from different fleets of the Russian Navy, Russian agencies said, citing the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Earlier Tuesday, Russia announced plans for similar exercises in the Barents Sea.

According to the North Sea Fleet, about 20 ships and escort ships and more than 10 North Sea Fleet Army and Air Defense aircraft have begun scheduled exercises in the Barents Sea.
