Russia plans to deploy the first military unit armed with Sarmat ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads by autumn at the latest, the TASS news agency reported on Saturday, citing Dmitry Rogozin, head of the Russian intelligence service.
The unit will be located near the Krasnoyarsk region, about 3,000 kilometers east of Moscow, TASS quoted him as saying in an interview with state television channel Rossiya 24. According to Rogozin, the target is “ambitious”.
He said they would be placed in the same locations as the Soviet-era Voyevoda missiles they were replacing, which would save “colossal resources and time”.
The launch of the “supership” was a historic event that will guarantee the safety of Russia’s children and grandchildren for the next 30-40 years, Rogozin added.
Russia announced the first test launch of the Sarmat missile on Wednesday. Western military experts estimate that more steps will be needed before the missile can be deployed.
Sarmat is capable of carrying 10 or more nuclear warheads and hitting targets thousands of miles away in the United States or Europe.
This week’s test, after years of delays due to funding and technical issues, marks a show of strength from Russia at a time when the war in Ukraine has brought tensions with the US and Europe to their highest levels since the missile crisis. Cuba in 1962.
The West’s concern over the risk of nuclear war has grown since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine on February 24 in a speech that focused on Moscow’s nuclear program and warned that any attempt to Russia “will lead you to such consequences that you have never encountered in your history.”
“The prospect of a nuclear conflict that was once unthinkable is now back in the realm of the possible,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said last month.
