Russia: “Potential for economic damage is increasing”, says Eurasia Group director

In an interview with CNNthis Wednesday (2), the executive director for the Americas of the Eurasia Group, Christopher Garman, commented on the situation in Russia after the decision of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) to pass a resolution condemning Russia for the invasion of Ukraine.

The meeting was convened by the Security Council and held as an emergency to discuss the situation in Eastern Europe. For approval, a majority of 2/3 of the voters was needed.

Brazil was one of 141 countries that voted in favor. There were five votes against and 35 abstentions.

“Obviously it is an important symbolic vote, which shows the degree of isolation that Russia has in the world today, the US and European countries worked hard to have an expressive vote like this; even putting pressure on Brazil to be able to follow this vote,” said Garman.

“The aim of the countries of Europe and the US is to try to impose harsh penalties on Russia’s economy and show Putin that this invasion will bring very high costs – not only in diplomatic but economic terms – and greater isolation than he was anticipating. This vote expresses the degree of rejection and isolation that Russia is experiencing today,” added the expert.

The executive director for the Americas of the Eurasia Group, Christopher Garman, also said that the economic problems generated by this conflict provoked by Russia, could increase even more, considering the sanctions imposed both by Vladimir Putin and by Western countries.

“His reaction may be more aggressive, to punish European countries with restrictions on the supply of oil and gas to Europe. Europe is very sensitive and depends on Russian gas to heat its homes. I would say the potential for economic damage is increasing, the degree of uncertainty as well, because having an injured beast like Putin is dangerous, not to mention the state of mind he is in today,” he said.
