Russia said on Wednesday it was ready to provide humanitarian corridors for people fleeing Kiev and four other Ukrainian cities. The number of refugees from the war has exceeded 2 million, according to data from the United Nations (UN).
Mikhail Mizintsev, head of Russia’s National Defense Control Center, was quoted in a statement to the Tass news agency that Russian forces would “observe a regime of silence” starting at 10 am Moscow time (4 am GMT) to ensure the safe passage of civilians.
In addition to Kiev, humanitarian corridors for people will be in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv and Mariupol.
It was unclear whether the proposed routes would pass through Russia or Belarus, conditions the Ukrainian government had previously opposed.
Russia and Ukraine have negotiated routes for the refugees, but many sites were targeted by attacks over the weekend.
Civilians fled Sumy on Tuesday in the first open “humanitarian corridor” since the invasion of Russia. Ukraine has accused Russian forces of bombing another evacuation route, starting from Mariupol in the south of the country.
