Russia: Putin imposes ‘restriction’ on Telegram and Whatsapp

The Russian Communications Regulatory Authority, Roskomnadzor, as reported by the Russian News Agency Interfax. President Vladimir Putin signed a law last month that allows the development of a state -supported implementation of messages integrated into government services, as Russia is trying to reduce its dependence on platforms such as Whatsapp and Telegram. Russia has long been seeking to consolidate what it calls digital domination by promoting domestic services. Its attempt to replace foreign technological platforms has become more urgent as some Western companies withdrew from the Russian market after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
