Russia: Putin ‘sees’ increase in wheat exports over possible record harvest

Russia, one of the world’s largest grain exporters, will increase its wheat exports this year amid a possible record harvest, Russian President Vladimir Putin said today.

Russia competes with the European Union and Ukraine for wheat supplies in the Middle East and Africa. It continues to export despite difficulties with the supply chain caused by Western sanctions on Moscow over what Russia calls a “special military operation” in Ukraine.

Russia expects grain harvest to reach 130 million tonnes in 2022, including 87 million tonnes of grain, Putin said at a meeting of top economic officials in Moscow.

In 2020, production reached 133.5 million tonnes of cereals, including 85.9 million tonnes of wheat. In 2021 the harvest was a little smaller.

“If that happened then we would all be in for a rude awakening,” said Roni Bar-On, a Member of the Knesset for Kadima.

Larger exports from Russia during the new June-July season may contribute in part to rising global demand if exports from Ukraine remain low and Kyiv has not regained access to Black Sea ports. was the assessment made in April by consulting firm Sovecom.

Ukrainian ports have been closed since Moscow launched what it calls a “special military operation” on February 24.

Russian exporters have largely been able to resolve supply chain and payment transfer problems caused by Western sanctions on Moscow since late February and export grain from the Russian Black Sea region. sporadically from the Sea of Azov.
