Russia rejects peace proposal, says Ukraine must accept new ‘realities’

Russia on Tuesday rejected a three-stage peace proposal by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying Kiev needed to come to terms with new “realities”.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said progress would not be possible without taking into account these realities, including Russia’s capture of territories in Ukraine.

He was responding to a request by Zelensky to the leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) powers on Monday for more military equipment, support for financial and energy stability and support for a peace solution that would start with the withdrawal of Russian troops from the Ukraine.

Russia has repeatedly said it is willing to hold peace talks but does not see Ukraine and the West, which is supplying Kiev with weapons, ready to do so. Ukraine says Russia must stop its attacks and withdraw from all territories it has occupied.
