Russia’s emergency services reported on Wednesday that they rescued all 139 fishermen arrested on an ice block to the Okhotsk sea drift in the Western Pacific.
Previously, authorities said about 300 people were arrested and some of them refused to “leave without fishing under any circumstances.”
Videos of the rescue operation were published by a Russian ministry, including one showing fishermen walking on snowy ice away from rescuers.
Later the folder commented on the Telegram message app that a rescue operation involving helicopters and vessels had brought all 139 people trapped to the coast.
Traditionally, the winter fishing season in Sakhalin begins in early February with an active fishing period until April.
About 10 meters of ice crack formed from Malki’s Russian village to the mouth of the Dolinka River in the region, leaving fishermen to the Okhotsk sea drift, the ministry reported earlier.
Winter in the Sakhalin region in the far east of Russia, which includes Sakhalin Island and the chain of the curilla islands, are cold, with snow and long, often lasting more than five months.
