Russia restricts exports of enriched uranium to the US

Moscow, the world’s largest supplier of enriched uranium, announced today that it has imposed temporary restrictions on enriched uranium exports to the United States, a symbolic punitive move after the US banned imports of Russian uranium. Russia owns about 44 percent of the world’s uranium enrichment capacity, and about 35 percent of U.S. nuclear fuel imports come from Russia, according to the U.S. Nuclear Energy Agency. But in May, President Joe Biden signed into law a ban on Russian enriched uranium, although the US also has the ability to issue exemptions if there are supply concerns. Russia’s government says a decision has been signed to impose temporary restrictions on exports to the United States, although it says there are exceptions. “The decision was made on the instructions of the president in response to the restriction and ban imposed by the United States,” the Russian government said in its statement.
