Russia: Return to base for more than 10,000 troops training near Ukraine

More than 10,000 Russian soldiers are returning to their permanent bases after a month of training near Ukraine, as reported today by the Interfax news agency, citing the Russian army.

Interfax reported that the high schools took place in several areas near Ukraine, including Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, as well as in the southern Russian regions of Rostov and Kuban.

The development on the Russian side of tens of thousands of troops near Ukraine had fueled fears in Kiev and Western capitals that Moscow was planning an attack.

THE Russia denies any such plans, arguing that it needs commitments from the West – including NATO’s promise not to extend the alliance east of the Russian border – because its own security is threatened by strengthening Ukraine’s ties with the West. Moscow also claims that it can deploy troops on its territory as it sees fit.

Estimates of the number of Russian troops recently transferred to Ukraine range from 60,000 to 90,000, with a US intelligence document stating that the number could rise to 175,000.
