Russian journalist Marina Ovsyannikova called on the people of her country to denounce the Russian army’s attack on Ukraine.
“Times are very dark and very difficult and every person who has a political point of view and wants to make that point known should make their voice heard. It is very important,” the Russian journalist who became famous told ABC. when he stormed a Pervy Kanal news program on Russian state television holding placards with slogans against the Russian attack on Ukraine and against Kremlin propaganda.
“The Russian people are really against the war, it’s Putin’s war, not the Russian people’s war,” he said.
He told ABC that with his action last Monday he wanted to do something “more resonant, to attract more attention” from the demonstrations that are being suppressed by the Russian police, “he said.
“I could see that what is really happening in Ukraine and what the programs on my channel showed were very different.” I wanted to show the world that the Russians are against the war, to expose the propaganda for what it is and, perhaps, to motivate people to denounce war. ”
“I was hoping that my action, in a sense, could make people change their minds.”
Marina Ovsyanikova was arrested and, after a short detention, fined and released. Since then, he has left state television and risks being charged under a new law banning any “false news” about the Russian military, citing heavy prison sentences.
