Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was abruptly transferred from prison where he was serving an 11-1 / 2 year sentence to an unknown location, two years after he was poisoned with a substance that the West describes as a neurotoxic agent.

When his lawyer arrived at Penitentiary Colony No. 2, a prison in Pokrov, 119 kilometers east of Moscow, he was told: “There is no such prisoner here,” according to Navalny’s chief of staff, Leonid Volkov.
“We do not know where Alexei is now and to which prison colony he has been transferred,” Volkov told the Telegram.
Navalny’s spokeswoman said there had been rumors that she had been transferred to the IK-6 high-security prison colony in Melekhovo, near the town of Vladimir, about 250 kilometers east of it. Moscow.
Russia’s prison service did not respond to a request for comment.
“The problem with transferring him to another prison colony is not that it is a colony of high security prisoners, it is something more frightening: the main thing is that we do not know where Alexei is,” said Kira Yamris’s spokeswoman.
“He is alone in confronting the system that tried to kill him,” Yarmis added.
Navalny won the admiration of the diverse Russian opposition when he returned voluntarily to Russia in 2021 from Germany, where he had been treated, after an attempt to poison him in Siberia with a neurotoxic agent as shown by laboratory tests in the West.
Upon his return, he was imprisoned for suspended convictions. Russia denies Navalny’s allegations that he was poisoned by the Russian secret police with the neurotoxic agent Novitsok.
On March 24, Navalny was sentenced to nine years in prison for fraud and contempt of court. The opposition leader said the accusations against him were fabricated and aimed at reviewing his political ambitions.
The judge ordered Navalny transferred to a high-security prison where his rights to visit and correspond would be limited.
Navalny’s political network has been largely dismantled since his imprisonment, after being outlawed as an “extremist” organization. Top executives and network executives have either been jailed or forced into exile.
Navalny said two weeks ago that in a new criminal case he was charged with creating an extremist organization and inciting hatred against the authorities, offenses that carry a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
