Russia: Russian products are replacing imported products on supermarket shelves

The products produced in Russia accounted for 83% of the Russian consumer goods market in the first half of 2022, with their share being up 4% compared to a year earlier, according to research published today by the company NielsenIQ.

Domestic production of so-called fast-moving consumer goods, which have relatively low costs and sell quickly, fill store shelves as imports plunge due to Western sanctions against Russia.

The sanctions, imposed after Moscow deployed tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine at the end of February, they resulted number of foreign companiesmany of which from the consumer goods sector, to leave the country.

Some of them greater reductions in foreign products were noted, as reported by APE-MBE, at purchase of alcoholic beverageswhere Russian beer accounted for 89% of sales in the first half of 2022 compared with 79% a year earlier, according to Nielsen data.

Last week on the shelves of Moscow supermarkets there were still beers produced and sold by foreign breweries that had announced their plans to leave Russia, showing how long it takes for the impact of restrictions on consumers.

“The variety of products available to consumers on store shelves has decreased,” said Konstantin Loktev, senior executive at NielsenIQ. “In this difficult period, a second trend began to develop – products that have disappeared from the shelves have begun to be replaced in the consumer’s basket by brands produced in Russia, for which huge opportunities have opened up.”

According to the data, the share of snacks and personal care products produced in Russia has also increased.
