Russia: Russian rock legend Yuri Shevtsuk prosecuted for denouncing attack on Ukraine

Yuri Shevtsuk, a Russian rock monster, has been accused of defaming the Russian military after denouncing attacks on Ukraine and President Vladimir Putin during a concert.

A court in Ufa (central Russia) announced on Thursday, the Russian news agency Ria Novosti, that the singer is being prosecuted for “public action aimed at defaming the use of the Russian armed forces” and that the file will be forwarded to its jurisdiction. city ​​where he lives.

On May 18, in front of an audience in Ufa, the 65-year-old singer said that “homeland, it is not to be the president’s lover permanently”, according to videos posted on the internet.

“Now they are killing people in Ukraine, why? Our boys are dying in Ukraine, why?” he says to the crowd, complaining that “the youth of Ukraine and Russia are dying (…) because of the Napoleonic plans of our Caesar”.

Yuri Shevtsuk faces the risk of being fined in this case, but the Russian penal code provides for penalties for these offenses, which can go up to five years in prison in case of recidivism and aggravating circumstances.

The leader of the rock band DDT, famous in the former USSR, had denounced the rule of Vladimir Putin over the years, even disapproving of him during a meeting in 2010 that was televised.

He was also one of the instigators of a huge controversy in Russia in 2011-2012, which was suppressed by the Kremlin.

Before the Putin era, Yuri Shevchuk had distinguished himself for his campaign against the first Chechen war (1994-1996).

He began his career in the 1980s, the last decade of the USSR, gaining popularity because of his anti-systemic songs in this crisis-ridden empire. With the fall of the USSR in 1991, Shevtsuk was already a form of Russian rock.
