Russia says forces ‘continue to repel’ Ukrainian incursion into Kursk

The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces continue to “repel an attempt by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to invade the territory of the Russian Federation,” a week after a Ukrainian incursion began in the Kursk region.

The ministry said on Wednesday (14) that the northern group of forces, which has air and drone support, had prevented efforts by Kiev troops to make further advances “deep into Russian territory”. It also mentioned small settlements, including Skrylevka and Levshinka, which are about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the border.

Earlier on Wednesday (14), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said troops had advanced one to two kilometers in the Kursk region.

The Russian Ministry published a video of alleged Ukrainian soldiers near the town of Martynovka, but the CNN was unable to verify the location of the video or the identities of those present. The Ministry claims, through a video that allegedly shows the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers, that Ukraine lost 270 servicemen and 16 armored vehicles.

The ministry said that “in the Martynovka area, two enemy groups were discovered and destroyed.” Martynovka is located a few kilometers northeast of the city of Sudzha, where Ukrainian forces have been present since last Wednesday (7). Videos located by CNN show a continued Ukrainian military presence in settlements near Sudzha.

The Russian ministry also said its aircraft had carried out strikes on Ukrainian reserves across the border in the Sumy region. It is unclear to what extent Russia is redeploying units from other areas along the front lines to bolster the defense of Kursk, but it appears to be redirecting reserves.

Ukraine says anti-aircraft missiles shot down a Russian Su-34 fighter jet in the Kursk region on Tuesday night.

Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv regional military administration, said he had not seen a withdrawal of Russian troops from the city.
