Russia said this Thursday (19) that it is coordinating its policy in the Middle East and North Africa with China, an increasingly close ally, which received a visit from President Vladimir Putin this week.
The Russians claim that the country’s deputy foreign minister, Mikhail Bogdanov, held talks in Doha with Zhai Jun, China’s special envoy for the Middle East. The two exchanged views on the conflict between Israel and the radical Islamic group Hamas.
“There was confirmation of Moscow and Beijing’s constant focus on close coordination of efforts in the interests of a political solution to this and other crises in the Middle East and North Africa,” said a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Russia considers itself a potential intermediary between Israel and Hamas, the extremist organization that triggered the current crisis with a surprise attack on October 7. Israel responded with aerial bombardments that Gaza authorities say injured and killed thousands of Palestinians.
Moscow tried to place some of the blame for the crisis on the United States, Ukraine’s most powerful ally, a country that Russia invaded in 2022.
A United Nations (UN) Security Council resolution drafted by Russia that called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, coupled with the release of hostages, humanitarian access and the safe evacuation of civilians in need, was not approved on Monday (16).
The text condemned violence against civilians and all acts of terrorism, but did not specifically mention Hamas.
