Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Wednesday that its forces had expelled Ukrainian units from positions around the settlements of Krasnohorivka and Yasynuvata in the Donetsk region.
In its daily briefing, the ministry said “fierce fighting” was taking place around Avdiivka, a large town located between the two settlements, which has been virtually leveled in months of fighting.
The ministry also said it had destroyed Ukraine’s “last warship” during a missile strike in Odesa. It provided no evidence for the claim.
Tuesday night and Wednesday morning were marked by a series of clashes and attacks in different parts of Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian officials said an explosion near the Three Sisters monument on the border of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine was caused by Russian forces blowing up the Chernihiv-Bryansk road.
A CNN geolocated a video widely circulated on social media that shows a large explosion on the road leading to the monument. It is unclear what type of ammunition was involved.
Andrii Demchenko, spokesman for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, told CNN: “Yesterday, in the Chernihiv region, border detachments of the State Border Guard Service recorded an explosion at noon in the direction of the junction of the three countries”. Russian or Belarusian officials have yet to comment.

The Three Sisters monument, inaugurated on May 3, 1975, was built to symbolize the friendship of the three countries, which at the time were republics of the Soviet Union.
Later, as early as Wednesday, two oil refineries just 65-80 km east of Russia’s biggest oil export terminals, according to Russian officials. One hit the Afipsky oil refinery in Russia’s Krasnodar region, causing a fire that was later extinguished, Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said.
Another attack on Russian territory takes place in the city of Shebekino, in the Belgorod region. Four people were injured in a “massive attack”, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Telegram.
