The Russian Defense Ministry said it opened humanitarian corridors in five Ukrainian cities, including the capital Kiev, on Tuesday. According to the ministry, Russian forces stopped attacks on these locations from 9 am local time (4 am GMT).
In addition to Kiev, corridors are located in Cherhihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv and Mariupol, allowing civilians to safely evacuate cities.
According to Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, the first group will leave Sumy, located near the Russian border, at 10 am local time (5 am GMT).
Civilians have been stranded for weeks in Ukrainian cities hardest hit by Russian attacks. Humanitarian corridors have opened in some Ukrainian cities in recent days, but Ukraine has accused Russia’s military of attacking civilians.
This Monday (7), the Russians opened new corridors that would take Ukrainian citizens to cities in Belarus and Russia, conditions considered “immoral” by Ukraine.
