Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Sunday that Russian forces hit a Ukrainian military boat in the port of Odessa, Ukraine, with high-precision missiles.
The Ukrainian military said missiles hit the port on Saturday, threatening a deal signed a day earlier to unblock grain exports from Black Sea ports and alleviate global food shortages caused by the war.
According to Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko, the attack “breaks its promises and undermines its commitments to the United Nations (UN) and Turkey on the Istanbul agreement”.
This comes shortly after the countries signed an agreement to reopen Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea for grain exports — a growing concern for other countries as the war continues. Russia and Ukraine are among the biggest food exporters in the world.
António Guterres, UN secretary general, condemned the attacks on the port. In a statement, the organization’s spokeswoman, Farhan Haq, said that “these products are desperately needed to address the global food crisis and alleviate the suffering of millions of people in need around the world.”
