The Ministry of Defense Russia reported this Sunday (3) that its troops surrounded the city of Lysychansk, in the east of Ukraine the last major Ukrainian stronghold in the Luhansk region.
Russia has focused on pushing Ukrainian forces out of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions of the Donbas, where Moscow-backed separatists have been fighting Kyiv since Russia’s first military intervention in Ukraine in 2014.
The folder said its troops had captured the villages around Lysychansk, which surround the area, and are now fighting Ukrainians inside the city.
“Russian troops and units of the Luhansk People’s Republic are fighting inside Lysychansk, completely defeating the encircled enemy,” the ministry said in a statement.
The Russian Defense Ministry added that it had hit military infrastructure in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, as well as a base used by foreign fighters on the outskirts of Mykolaiv in the south of the country.
The report contacted the Russian Defense Ministry and the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but received no response.
