Russia says its troops intercepted a major airstrike in Crimea

The Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday (15) that troops had suppressed a major airstrike on the Crimean peninsula launched by Ukrainian forces.

Moscow said it intercepted 10 “American Atakms tactical missiles [ATACMS]” about Crimea.

Missiles were shot down near the Belbek military airfield, according to Mikhail Razvozhayev, governor of the Crimean port city of Sevastopol, suggesting this could be the Ukrainians' target.

Elsewhere in Russia, two explosions occurred at a fuel base in the Proletarsky district due to two drone attacks, according to Vasily Golubev, governor of the Rostov region.

No casualties were reported in either attack.

During his current visit to Kiev, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that American ATACMS were part of recently supplied weapons that are already “on the front line”.

On Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Blinken that Ukraine urgently needed air defenses.

A CNN has contacted Ukrainian authorities for comment.
