Russia says no contact with US over Ukraine peace talks

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday that there had been no contact with the United States about peace talks in Ukraine.

“The US government forbids its representatives in Kiev from even thinking about talking to us, and evidently forces them to fight to the last Ukrainian,” Zakharova told reporters.

Peace talks between Russia and Ukraine have stalled since early April, when Turkey-brokered ceasefire talks in Istanbul failed.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has played down the possibility of dialogue while Russian troops still occupy the country’s territory. On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said peace talks with Ukraine “made no sense”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on July 7 that his country had “not started anything serious yet” in Ukraine, and challenged the West to try to defeat the Russians on the battlefield.
