Russia says several buyers have agreed to pay in rubles for Russian gas

Several buyers of Russian gas have agreed to switch to payments in rubles, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said today.

“We are waiting for the decision (for a change in rubles) from other importers,” he added, with his comments being published in a periodical of his ministry. He did not disclose who the customers were who had already made the change.

President Vladimir Putin said last month that buyers of Russian gas from “unfriendly” countries would have to pay in rubles, a move rejected by European Union authorities under the EU’s sanctions regime against Moscow.

Putin has warned Europe that it risks losing gas supplies unless it pays in Russian currency as it seeks retaliation for sanctions imposed by Moscow on what it calls a “special military operation” in Ukraine.

In March, Putin suggested that energy buyers open accounts with Gazprombank, where payments in euros or dollars would be converted into rubles.

Armenia has made several payments for the supply of Russian gas in rubles, Economy Minister Vagan Kerobyan said today in an interview with Russian media RBC.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Sizarto said on Monday that Hungary plans to pay for Russian gas in euros through Gazprombank.
