Russia says Switzerland is ‘not neutral’ and cannot broker talks with Ukraine

Russia said on Thursday it had turned down an offer from Switzerland to represent Ukrainian interests in Russia and Moscow’s interests in Ukraine because it no longer considers Switzerland to be a neutral country.

Switzerland has a long diplomatic tradition of acting as an intermediary between countries whose relations have broken down, but Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ivan Nechayev said that was not possible in the current situation.

“The Swiss were really interested in our opinion on the possible representation of Ukraine’s interests in Russia and Russia’s interests in Ukraine,” Nechayev told reporters.

“We answer very clearly that Switzerland has unfortunately lost its status as a neutral state and cannot act as an intermediary or representative. bern [capital da Suíça] adhered to illegal Western sanctions against Russia,” he added.

Switzerland has followed almost every sanction the European Union has imposed on Russia for its military intervention in Ukraine.

Swiss media previously reported that the main purpose of the Swiss proposal would be to allow Ukrainians living in Russia to receive consular services from the Swiss embassy in Moscow.
