Russia has announced it will put peace talks with Ukraine “on a long pause” after Ukraine launched a surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region last week.
“With the terrorist actions in the Kursk area, Ukraine has, at the very least, put peace negotiations on hold for a long time,” Russian Foreign Ministry Special Envoy Rodion Miroshnik said at a press conference on Wednesday (14).
Miroshnik said he believed Ukraine’s incursion was done “deliberately” to stall negotiations.
Peace efforts have long since failed. Russia has called on Ukraine to give up four of its eastern regions, something Kiev finds unacceptable.
The exact purpose of Ukraine’s attack on Kursk is still unclear, but there is speculation that Ukraine may be seeking a position of greater influence if negotiations take place.
