Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Tuesday that Ukrainian special services had organized alleged killings of civilians in Ukrainian cities in an attempt to spread propaganda through Western media.
Russia has denied being responsible for the footage in Bucha, which reverberated worldwide as dead civilians were pulled from the streets and mass graves were found there.
“Soldiers from Ukraine’s 72nd Main Psychological Operations Center carried out another staged footage of civilians allegedly killed by the violent actions of the Russian armed forces” on April 4 in a village 23 kilometers northwest of Kiev, the ministry said.
“Similar events have already been organized by Ukrainian special services in Sumy, Konotop and other cities,” they added.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also spoke out on Tuesday and said the allegations were a “monstrous forgery” aimed at defaming the Russian army.
“It’s just a well-directed but tragic show,” Peskov said during a press conference. “It’s a forgery intended to defame the Russian army, and it won’t work.”
“Once again, we urge the international community: detach yourself from such emotional perceptions and think with your head,” said Peskov. “Compare the facts and understand what a monstrous falsification we are dealing with.”
Asked about US President Joe Biden’s call for President Vladimir Putin to be tried for war crimes, Peskov further said such remarks were unacceptable and unworthy of a US leader.
