Russia says Vinnytsia attack targeted Ukrainian military meeting

The Russian Defense Ministry said on Friday that the missile attack on Vinnytsia, in central Ukraine, targeted a military installation at the time a meeting of the Ukrainian Air Force command was taking place.

“On July 14, high-precision sea-based Kalibr missiles hit the Garrison Officers’ House in Vinnytsia,” the Russian ministry said on Telegram.

“A Ukrainian Air Force command meeting was being held at the facility with representatives of foreign arms suppliers discussing the dispatch of another batch of aircraft and means of destruction, as well as arranging the repair of Ukrainian aircraft. The attack resulted in the elimination of the meeting participants,” he added.

At least 23 people died in the attack, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, including three children. On Thursday, Vinnytsia police chief Igor Klymenko said that “three Russian missiles were aimed at an office building”.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba described the missile attack as “terrorism” and a “deliberate killing of civilians to spread fear”.

In his evening speech on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the international community to officially recognize Russia as a terrorist state, saying that “Russia has shown its attitude towards international law, Europe and the entire civilized world. ”.
