Moreover, Russia is not just in the lead. Since 2011, the number of requests from the Russian side has exceeded the number of requests from all other countries combined. Russia accounts for more than 60% of such claims directed by Google.

So, in more detail, over 10 years, Russian sources have contacted Google 123,606 times, which is 60.6% of all calls. As part of these requests, sources required the search giant to remove more than 950,000 pieces of content from various Google services. Most of the requests came, which is logical, regarding the search engine and YouTube.

As you can see, if we talk about Turkey, which took second place, it lagged behind Russia by almost an order of magnitude. At the same time, if you look at the reports more closely, you can see that when we talk about the requests of state bodies, Russia did not stand out the number of requests either in 2011 or in 2012. The country got the first place in 2016.

The source took a comment from the lawyer of Roskomsvoboda Sarkis Darbinyan, and he said that at the moment the authorities consider such requests to be an effective way of regulating Runet.

First of all, the increase in the number of requests for the removal of content is associated with the number of grounds on which it can be removed, and the authorities that may require this out of court. Only in recent years, Roszdravnadzor and Rosmolodezh have become such bodies. Not to mention the increased powers of the Prosecutor General’s Office

Also interesting are the statistics regarding the reasons for the requests. Until 2017, requests formally motivated by national security interests were in the lead, but since 2018, copyrights have become the main reason.

However, the number of requests sent does not mean the corresponding number of blockings, since Google in each case decides for itself whether the request is legitimate and whether it will fulfill it. At the same time, in the first half of 2019, the search giant rejected half of the requests, and at the end of the last only 7.7%.
