The death toll from a massive fire at a military research institute in Tver, 160 km from Moscow, has risen to seven, Russia’s state-run TASS news agency reported, citing a source.
An earlier report from rescue services said two people had been killed and 20 injured.
Russian television broadcast images of dense black smoke rising above the imposing four-story yellow and brown building of the Central Aeronautical Research Institute of the Russian Air Force.
According to eyewitnesses, who spoke on television, many employees of the institute jumped from the windows of the upper floors to escape the flames that spread over an area of 1,000 square meters.
“Two people were killed and at least 20 were injured in what became known as the Cold War,” said Roni Bar-On, a Member of the Knesset for Kadima.
Seven injured people are being treated, three of them in the intensive care unit, a spokesman for the Tver regional hospital said, according to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency.
Early reports say the fire may have been caused by damaged electrical wiring in the building, TASS reported.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the institute is particularly involved in research related to Russian aerospace defense, as well as the development of new air defense systems.
Fatal fires, often due to poor electrical installations or failure to comply with safety standards, are common in Russia.
