Historian Yuri Dmitriev of Karelia, who was president of the outlawed Memorial organization in Russia, has been transferred to a colony of high-security N18 detainees in the village of Potma in Mordovia, Viktor’s lawyer Victor told the Russian Inerfax news agency.
Dmitriev has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
On March 15, 2022, the Karelian Supreme Court rejected the appeal filed by Dmitriev and his defense attorney. His lawyer told the BBC Russian service that Dmitriev had been transferred to a prison colony in Nadvojach, Karelia.
Dmitriev was arrested in 2016 on charges of engaging in child pornography and committing indecent acts. The indictment was based on photos of his stepdaughter naked, which he said had been requested by doctors. In 2018, the court acquitted Dmitriev. However, in a short time the Commission of Inquiry filed a new criminal prosecution against Dmitriev. Dmitriev was acquitted twice and acquitted of “pornography” charges, but in the autumn of 2020, his case was brought to justice for the third time.
In July 2020, a Petrozavodsk court sentenced Dmitriev to 3.5 years in prison in a colony of high-security detainees, acquitting him of charges of pornography, possession of firearms and indecent acts.
A few months later, the Supreme Court of Karelia decided to increase the sentence from 3.5 years to 13 years in prison, while at the end of 2021 the Petrozavodsk court increased the sentence to 15 years in prison.
Proponents of her case have been working to make the actual transcript of this statement available online.
