Russia: State Duma Council to hold emergency meeting on Zaporizhia nuclear power plant

LAST UPDATE: 18:26

Russia’s parliament has announced it will hold a special session on Thursday to discuss the situation surrounding the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in eastern Ukraine.

In the official announcement, released by the parliament today, it is stated that the meeting of the Council of the State Duma (lower house) will take place on August 25 in which “the threat to the safety of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant” will be discussed.

Sergei Mironov, head of the pro-Kremlin Just Russia party in parliament, said the council, which includes the parliament speaker and party leaders, would approve a “tough statement” on Kiev’s actions in relation to the station and called on the United Nations and other international organizations to intervene.

Moscow accuses Kyiv of shelling the area of the station, which is under the control of Russian forces but still operates with Ukrainian personnel. Kyiv rejects claims of bombing of the plant, which is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, and says Russia is planning a “provocation” there to further justify its aggressive action.

Russia’s defense ministry said last week it could shut down the nuclear plant if the bombing continues.

Russia requested the convening of the UN Security Council

Russia today requested the convening of the UN Security Council tomorrow on the issue of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, state news agency RIA reported, citing Deputy Russian Ambassador to the UN Dmitry Polyansky.

Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, was seized in March by Russian troops. The station is close to the war front and has been the target of bombings in recent weeks, raising fears of a nuclear disaster. Both Ukraine and Russia blame each other for the bombings at the nuclear plant site.
