Russia: Student sentenced to 8.5 years in prison for posting ‘false information’ about the military

Court of Moscow condemned today Russian student in eight and a half years imprisonment for posting “false” information about him on Telegram Russian army. A student of Mathematics and Computer Science at Moscow’s Lomonosov University, 23-year-old Dmitry Ivanov was found guilty of spreading “false news about the Russian military motivated by political hatred,” Russian news agency Tass reported.

For this crime, which was added to the Russian criminal code after the invasion of Ukraine, people who have publicly criticized the war have been repeatedly sentenced to heavy prison terms. On his Telegram account “Protestny MGU” (Protesting MGU), which he created to denounce violations of students’ rights, Ivanov posted, among other things, messages criticizing the Russian invasion of Ukraine and statements by the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.

THE Russia calls the invasion of Ukraine a “special military operation” and the authorities have adopted a bill that provides for penalties of up to 15 years in prison for anyone who publishes information about the army that is deemed “false”, APE BPE reports.

Thousands of Russians who have criticized publicly the war and the brutalities of the Russian army in Ukraine have been ordered to pay fines. Dozens of others, who have been prosecuted after being charged a lot fineshave been sentenced to heavy prison terms or are awaiting sentencing.
