Russia has test-fired 10 new Tsirkon (Zircon) supersonic missiles from a frigate and two more from a submarine, the Interfax news agency reported on Friday, citing the northern fleet.
According to Reuters, Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised the weapon as part of a new generation of unrivaled weapons systems.
Putin described the missile test last week as “a major milestone in the life of the country,” adding that it was “an essential step” in increasing Russia’s defense capabilities.
Some Western experts have questioned how advanced Russia’s new generation of weapons is, while acknowledging that the combination of speed, flexibility and height of supersonic missiles makes them difficult to detect and intercept.
Putin announced a series of new supersonic weapons in 2018 in one of his most belligerent speeches in years, saying they could hit almost anywhere in the world and avoid the US-built missile shield.
