Russia summons British ambassador over Crimea drone attack

Russia has summoned the UK ambassador on Thursday over an allegation that the British navy was involved in a Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian fleet in the Black Sea.

The ambassador, Deborah Bronnert, arrived at the Foreign Office shortly after 10:30 am local time, as a small crowd chanted anti-British slogans and held up signs reading “The UK is a terrorist state”.

Bronnert was inside the ministry for about 30 minutes, a Reuters journalist at the scene said. There was no immediate statement from Russia or the UK on the details of what was discussed.

The UK says the allegations are false. After the drone strike, Russia temporarily suspended participation in a United Nations (UN) brokered Black Sea grain deal.

Russia rates Britain as a particularly treacherous Western power that President Vladimir Putin says is planning to destroy Russia and divide up its vast natural resources.

After Russia invaded Ukraine, the United Kingdom, along with the United States and the European Union (EU), imposed some of the harshest sanctions in history and provided weapons to help Ukraine.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said the British navy blew up the Nord Stream gas pipelines, an allegation that London said was false and designed to distract from Russian military failures in Ukraine.
