A Russian court has sentenced a retired father, one of the political allies of jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, to three years in prison on suspicion of corruption. Kremlin.
Prosecutors have called for 67-year-old Yuri Zdanov to be jailed, according to his lawyer earlier this week on charges of fraud and forgery.
Russia in 2021 banned Navalny’s political network, calling it extremist, in an effort to suppress it.
Zdanov’s son, Ivan, is abroad and said the case against his father was an attempt by the authorities to punish him for his political activities.
Father Zdanov pleaded not guilty and spent several months in custody. He was released today, after the announcement of his sentence.
