Russia takes control of Staromaiorske in eastern Ukraine, official says

Russian military personnel took control of the village of Staromaiorske, in the Donetsk region, Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on Monday (10).

The Ukrainian military did not recognize the Russian achievement in a report released late this Monday (10).

Ukraine’s forces said the Russian military tried to advance near Staromaiorske and a nearby village, Vodiane, “but were unsuccessful.

Ukraine further stated that “the defense forces control the situation”.

The two villages are southwest of the region’s main city, also called Donetsk, controlled by Russia.

A Ukrainian war blog, DeepState, said Russian troops had made advances around Staromaiorske.

Reuters was unable to independently verify battlefield accounts from both sides.

Russia has made gains in the Donetsk region, a key point along the 1,000-kilometer-long front line, since capturing the town of Avdiivka in February after many months of heavy fighting.
