Russia’s communications regulator on Monday demanded that TikTok stop including military-related content in posts recommended for minors, in an announcement shared on its official Telegram channel.
Regulator Roskomnadzor said he had identified content on the video-sharing app related to Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine and that much of the material was anti-Russian.
TikTok is popular with younger users and also has a version aimed at children under 13. However, it was unclear exactly what it meant to say that TikTok was recommending content specifically for minors. The company recently said that it is testing age-rated content restrictions.
The app, originally known for lip-syncing videos and dancing trends that go viral, has been widely used to document events and share news in the run-up to and during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In the app, there was also the dissemination of misleading images about the conflict.
Russia, which has fined tech companies and crippled its services in the country during a long standoff with Big Tech platforms, has tightened restrictions during the conflict.
TikTok, owned by Chinese tech giant ByteDance, did not respond to a request for comment from the report.
