Russia: The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace officially closes by order of the Kremlin

Twenty-eight years after its founding, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace posted on social media the closure of its Moscow headquarters following an order from the Kremlin.

In a statement posted on social media, Carnegie expressed regret over the closure of its Moscow headquarters by a decision of the Russian Ministry of Justice on April 8, expressing confidence that the move would further deepen Russia’s international isolation.

The Carnegie Endowment was the first independent think tank to open in Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union and has since consistently set the stage for objective political analysis in Russia.

“As an institution dedicated to promoting international cooperation and peace through independent analysis and innovative strategic thinking, we remain committed to our principles and our commitment to our mission of more than a century,” the statement said.

The closure of Carnegie is the latest in a series of international organizations that have ceased operations in Russia following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Hundreds of Russian scientists fled, fearing for their safety in the face of an unprecedented wave of repression in Russia in recent years.
