Russia: The Kremlin also silenced Novaïa Rasskaz-Gazeta

Russian authorities today blocked the website of the new edition of the independent newspaper Novaïa Gazeta, which was forced to cease publication in March amid a Kremlin crackdown on critical voices.

On July 15, the Novaïa Gazeta editorial board published a printed magazine accompanied by an electronic version on a new website under the title Novaïa Rasskaz-Gazeta. The first sheet contains analyzes of Vladimir Putin’s totalitarianism and ideology.

But, a week later, Russia’s telecommunications watchdog blocked the new website at the request of the prosecution. Today, the website is not accessible in Russia without a VPN network.

“Our website was killed at birth. We held for seven days and nine hours,” the editorial group said in a statement, which clarified that Russian prosecutors are accusing it – without evidence – of defaming the Russian armed forces, a new offence. instituted in March to silence the slightest criticism of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“So far, there is no demand against our print edition. We will continue to prepare our second sheet,” the editorial team of Novaïa Rasskaz-Gazeta clarifies, urging its readers not to be discouraged.

Novaïa Gazeta, a pillar of investigative journalism in Russia, known for its investigations into the corruption of Russian elites and gross human rights violations in Russia, was forced at the end of March to cease both print and online editions. her.

Russian authorities threatened her with a ban for not complying with the “foreign agents” law. After the publication was stopped, part of the editorial team left Russia and publishes the new Novaïa Gazeta in electronic form from Western Europe.

Its director, Dmitry Muratov, was awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.
