Russia: The pandemic is getting worse in some areas

The Covid-19 pandemic has worsened in 10 Russian regions, although it was decided to keep workers away from work for a week in order to stem the rise in infections, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova said today.

At least five of the 85 districts have decided to extend the “non-working days” announced by President Vladimir Putin last month for next week.

But in most areas, including Moscow, workers will resume work next Monday, with some requiring visitors to public services, restaurants and cultural venues to display a QR code on their mobile phone to prove they have have been vaccinated or have been infected with the virus in the past.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova said the situation had worsened in the past week in 10 regions, including Tatarstan and Tsuvasia east of Moscow, as well as the Tuva and Krasnoyarsk regions of Siberia.

“In order to stop the spread of the virus, we must increase vaccinations and stop all attempts to falsify vaccination certificates,” Golikova said.

Russia rushed to develop and launch the Sputnik V vaccine when the pandemic began last year, but acceptance of the vaccine was slow, as many Russians do not trust the authorities and are afraid of being vaccinated.
