Russia: The upper house of the Russian parliament convenes in the afternoon

The upper house (Council of the Federation) of the Russian parliament on Tuesday informed the deputies, after the completion of the body’s work scheduled for today, not to leave the building, as an unscheduled sitting will follow (at 17.00 Greek time).

It is noted that at the scheduled meeting of the House earlier, the deputies unanimously approved the terms of friendship with the two breakaway regions of Ukraine, the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic, which officially recognized their independence, a development that the confrontation between Moscow and the West.

This is because the two treaties, which will enter into force as soon as President Putin signs them, could pave the way for Moscow to set up military bases there, adopt a common defense stance and boost economic integration.

A top US diplomat in Ukraine has previously said that Russia already had troops in uniform in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.

The extraordinary, unscheduled meeting of the Russian upper house of parliament is an unusual move, as nothing similar has happened for many years, according to the Interfax news agency, quoted by Reuters.

“Dear Colleagues, our sitting is adjourned for now until 18:00 (15:00 GMT). Please do not leave and return to the room at 18:00 in order to continue our sitting,” said Parliament Speaker Valentina Matvienko, a close associate of President Vladimir Putin.

The extraordinary convening of a new session of the upper house is not clear exactly what it concerns, nor what is going to be discussed.

It is noted that after the recognition of the two seceded Ukrainian territories by the Kremlin, fears have grown that Russia, which has gathered forces on the border with Ukraine, could launch an invasion, something that Moscow has categorically denied recently.
