Russia, the white blindfold, a new symbol of support for Putin

A white bandage: it is another symbol of support for the Kremlin, after the “Z” painted on Russian tanks, printed on T-shirts and written on the walls and doors of opponents’ homes. She is tied to the arm, and appears in the images posted on Russian social networks (in particular on VKontakte, the Russian Facebook, with the hashtag #BelajaPoVjaZka, «white bandage». Has been launched a special flash mob: participants were asked to wear a white armband as a sign of unity for the “liberation” of Ukraine. Mostly employees of government agencies joined, but the white headbands were also worn by school children.

The reference is to Bucha massacre, a town east of Kiev, which, according to Russian propaganda, is nothing more than a staging developed by Ukraine. Many of the victims, who were actually killed by Russian troops, were found with their hands tied behind their backs with white bandages. The #BelajaPoVjaZka campaign is also a way to reverse the truth about the massacre.

The white blindfold, for the Russians, would be a sign of “solidarity with those peaceful Ukrainians who have suffered or died from the indiscriminate fire by the Ukrainian armed forces and nationalist battalions»: This is the Russian version. The band tied to the arm is meant to be a symbol of support – on the part of the Russians in favor of the “special operation” (this is how Putin wants the invasion of Ukraine to be defined), which they think they are fighting against the neo-Nazis – to “our boys” who are fighting in Ukraine.

According to the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda, “The white ribbons are Russian signs of recognition”, but “civilians also wore them in centers controlled by the Russian army” who for this reason would have been “shot by Ukrainian territorial defense battalions”. A version that was contested by Kiev, as well as denied by dozens of witnesses.
