Moscow has announced that it will expel American diplomats from Russia, according to a statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.
A senior diplomat at the US diplomatic mission in Moscow received a note on Wednesday with a list of expelled US diplomatic officials declared “persona non grata”, according to the statement.
Persona non grata literally means “an unwanted person”.
The move came in response to Washington’s expulsion of 12 diplomats from the Russian Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, as well as a Russian official at the UN Secretariat.
This Wednesday (23) NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) leaders said they will propose sending additional troops to four Eastern European countries at the summit meeting, which takes place on Thursday (24).
The alliance’s secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, said that new troops should be sent to Eastern Europe in order to increase military forces in allied territories in the region.
“The first step is the launch of new NATO battalions in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia,” he said.
