Russia’s Defense Ministry announced tonight that it had rejected Ukraine’s efforts to retake Fidonisi, an island in the Black Sea, and that it had inflicted heavy casualties on Ukrainian forces, including men, ships and aircraft.
These allegations could not be verified by independent sources. Adviser to the Ukrainian presidency Oleksy Arestovich said earlier in an interview broadcast via YouTube that Ukraine is not trying to retake the island of Zmini (Fidonisi) because it is much easier to continue to hit Russian targets there.
Moscow claims that on May 8, the eve of Victory Day, as Russia celebrates the Soviet Army’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, Ukrainian forces attempted to occupy the island.
“This operation was a disaster for Ukraine,” said Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov.
