Russia – UN: They discuss fertilizer and grain exports

A first load of fertilizers is expected to depart next week for Malawi, says a statement issued by UN at the end of a meeting on exports between United Nations officials and Russian delegation in Geneva.

The meeting took place between the Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Rebecca Greenspan, the head of the UN agency for humanitarian affairs Martin Griffiths and the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin.

“The world cannot let the global problems of access to fertilizers develop into a global food shortage. For this reason, the UN calls on all actors to accelerate the removal of all remaining obstacles to the export and transport of fertilizers to the countries that need them the most.the announcement emphasizes.

The negotiators met for several hours at the UN headquarters in Geneva, but did not make a statement at the end of the meeting.

The Moscow condition on Russian exports of fertilizers and food products was adopted on July 22 in Turkey at the same time as the agreement on Ukrainian grain exports, which expires on November 19.

The multilateral control mechanism put in place has since allowed the export of 10.2 million tons of grain and food items from Ukraine, reducing prices on the world market as well as supplying some countries, which have an urgent need to feed starving populations.
