Russia upgrades Soviet weapons testing lab

A major weapons laboratory in Russia is upgrading its weapons testing facilities, which had been put into disuse after the fall of the Soviet Union, the state-run TASS news agency reported today, citing the company’s press service.

TsNIITochMash, which researches and designs weapons including anti-tank missiles and rifles for the Russian military, told TASS that the upgraded laboratory will be able to conduct tests of ballistic weapons and small-caliber firearms at extremely low temperatures.

Russia has liked to emphasize the capabilities of its weapons systems since its February 24 invasion of Ukraine, with President Vladimir Putin insisting that Russian military technology is “years” ahead of its rivals.

In a speech at the opening of an arms exhibition on Monday, Putin said Russia was ready to sell advanced weapons to its allies and cooperate with others in developing military technology.

Russia ranks second only to the United States in arms sales, worth about $15 billion a year, which constitutes nearly a fifth of the world’s export market.
